Going to College with Food Allergies: Why I’m on a New Mission

Our daughter is heading into ninth grade this fall, and while college is still a few years away, I already find myself thinking about it. A lot. Not in the “I hope she remembers to do laundry” way (though… also that), but in the “Will she be safe eating in a college dining hall?” kind of way.

Because here’s the thing: navigating college with food allergies is no small task.

As a food allergy mom — and a registered dietitian — I’ve researched a lot about food allergies on college campuses. A couple of years ago, I even wrote a blog post about some of the top colleges doing allergy-friendly dining really well. But this time, I’m not writing to list the best. I’m writing to say: it’s not enough.

I want to talk about what it feels like to think about sending your child with multiple food allergies off to college — into the unknown, where you’re not there to read every label, ask every question, or carry the EpiPen.

The Emotional Side of College With Food Allergies

There’s a long list of things teens worry about when they leave home — making friends, managing time, figuring out how to be semi-adult-ish. But for students with food allergies, there’s an extra layer of stress that can’t be ignored:

Will this food hurt me?
Can I trust the dining staff?
What if I can’t find anything safe to eat?

And for parents? Those questions are haunting.

What Needs to Change on College Campuses

It shouldn’t be this hard. We need colleges and universities to step up. Here’s what I believe we should expect — no, demand — when it comes to food allergies on college campuses:

  • At least one dining hall that is free from the top 9 allergens

  • Clear, consistent labeling, including “may contain” and cross-contact information

  • Trained staff who understand the seriousness of food allergies

  • Collaboration with companies that offer allergy-safe packaged snacks and products

Because navigating college with food allergies shouldn’t be a gamble. It should be safe, supported, and inclusive.

My New Mission

This year, I’m launching a new mission: to make real change in how colleges support students with food allergies.

Here’s my plan:

  • Collect stories from families who’ve been there — what’s working, what’s not

  • Connect with universities to learn what they’re doing and what’s missing

  • Partner with dining services and food companies to bring more allergy-friendly options directly onto campuses

I want to hear from you if you’ve already gone through this — your insight can make a huge difference.
